Feud Ends In Fatality In Marion

Sundays's early morning, and fatal, shooting in Marion seems to be the end to a pretty long feud.

"I don't know that it's a strange thing to happen there more than any other place," said Dave Leib, the undersheriff for Flathead county.

According to the Flathead County Sheriff's Department just before two in the morning on January 12, Mark Ames shot Harold Gordon in the chest with a .32 caliber handgun and then called the police on himself.

Police found Gordon slumped over a shotgun on the steps of the duplex he owned. He was taken to Kalispell Regional Medical Center, but he died before he got there. The odd part is that it was Mark Ames' wife, not Mark himself, who lived in the duplex with Gordon.

"Mark was estranged from his wife. We have no indication or knowledge of why he was there that night," said Leib.

Ames had a restraining order out against Gordon in Washington state; Gordon had one against Ames in Montana. After Gordon went over to talk to Ames, Ames went over to Gordon's and sprayed his apartment with an AK-47. He missed Gordon, but hit a black lab in the face, knocking out a few teeth. Police say Ames' estranged wife tried to mediate, but the two men clashed for the last time in front of the garage that separated the apartments and that is when Ames shot Gordon.

The duplex on Cardigan Way is roped off, with no trespassing signs saying "violators will be shot."

Neighbors did not want to speak on camera either, but several people said they did not hear any gunshots and police say they did not get any calls from neighbors.

Right now, Ames is in the Flathead County Detention Center with a recommended charge of deliberate homicide.

The Flathead County Attorney's Office is still going over the case before taking any formal action and setting a court date.
