Learn How to Keep Yourself Safe This Tax Season

Posted: Updated:
GREAT FALLS -

Its that time of the year again, tax season. It's a chore for most of us, but it has to get it done. The good news is there are tons of options. For example, tax websites. You can do them from home, and they all claim to be quick and painless, but they do have some draw backs.

Tammy Shubert, with the Jackson Hewitt Tax Service explains, "At home, there's no one to answer to. There's not a software that stops you and prompts you and says, did you do this? Did you check that?"

So what's the alternative? P.J. Sheldon, who is also from Jackson Hewitt, says, "You can't beat one on one. Meeting with some body. Knowing they are inputting your document on a safe site. Knowing their records are secure. Knowing they are able to rely on collecting that information."

This is especially vital when it comes to identity theft. According to , Deena Coffman, the CEO of Identity Theft 911, 43% of identity theft complaints come from doing taxes. Which means it has nearly doubled from 2011 to 2012. Luckily, employees at Jackson Hewitt have yet to see much of this in Great Falls. But to stay safe, whether its online or with a company's help, Tammy's biggest emphasis was on security. Make sure they have rules and regulations they abide by to protect you, because you can't put a price on your personal information.
