MAGIE Brings Ag Excitement For Kids And Adults

Posted: Updated:
GREAT FALLS -

MAGIE, or the Montana Agriculture and Industrial Expo, has arrived at the Montana Expo Park in Great Falls.  The largest agriculture in the state is full of rows upon rows of cool things to see and experience.  Instead of just browsing, why don't we start with an expert?

Micah Rumsey: Alright, I'm here with Bing VonBergen.  He's the President of the National Association of Wheat Growers, and Bing, why is it so important to come out here to MAGIE on a regular basis?

Bing VonBergen: Well, I think that this is the premier farm show in Montana.

MR: We have booths here.  We have events going on.  What are some of the cool things you look forward to seeing at MAGIE every year?

BV: There's always some piece of equipment that comes up that you might read about but sometimes this is the first place we actually see it.  So this is kind of like our Christmas Wish List that we come to see.

MR: So if MAGIE is like your Christmas list, so did Santa do his job this year and bring you what you want to see?

BV: (Laughter) I think that's going to depend on what the grain market does.

MAGIE isn't just for the adults. A number of kid programs have been added this year, including some vehicle safety.

MR: We're here with Alena and she's doing a lot of fun stuff with the kids, teaching them how to get on the four wheelers.  Tell us more about the safety you're teaching them.

Alena Standley: So this is all about ATV Safety.  On our farms and ranches, we have a lot of farmer and rancher members that have ATVs that they're using as tools.

MR: So the kids aren't just learning how to get the information, but they're also learning how to physically get on and see a visible example, so why's the important to have the kids actually get on the four wheelers behind us?

AS: Well, part of it is it's interactive.  It's fun.  So, there's keys in these.  We definitely didn't take on that liability, but it's really good for them to get on it and they see "oh, my foot doesn't reach the pedal.  I can't even turn this without shifting my whole weight" so they really get that experience.

I hope I've given you at least a small idea of all the big stuff going on here at MAGIE.  You can enjoy it yourself too.  Head out here on Friday or Saturday, all the fun keeps going, plus, a bunch of the 4-H ag competitions.  It'll be great, so I hope to see you there.
