Spell Ordered Back to Jail

Posted: Updated:

A Colorado man who is currently charged with killing a teacher in Sidney was returned to jail today after an evaluation took place to see if he is fit to stand trial.

Richland County Sheriff's Office saying that Michael Spell has returned to the detention center from Warm Springs where he has been for the past couple of months.

Prosecutors are asking for the death penalty in the 2012 murder of Sherry Arnold.  Spell's attorneys are arguing that mental disabilities would make him unable to understand the case against him or assist in his defense.

A judge ordering the psychiatric hospital to complete spell's evaluation by the 31st.

Another man involved in the case, Lester Van Waters Jr., pled guilty through a deal with prosecutors.  He is currently awaiting sentencing.
