Grizzly Bear Home After MRI

Posted: Updated:
BOZEMAN -

A Montana grizzly bear is gaining national attention after images of the bear undergoing an MRI went viral last week.

Now Lucy is back home at Montana Grizzly Encounter between Bozeman and Livingston.

"Her attitude started changing she started being kind of aggressive toward us," said Ami Testa, Montana Grizzly Encounter director.

Testa said the nearly 900-pound 3-year-old Lucy was getting sluggish and aggressive. A few weeks ago, so Testa called the vet.

She said when the vet came Lucy appeared to be in good health.

But on January 9 the sow suffered two seizures, forcing Testa to take the animal to Washington State University for an MRI and spinal tap.

"The results basically showed she had masses in her brain, didn't know exactly what it was," said Testa. "She also had too much fluid in her brain."

Testa said she look Lucy to WSU because they are they were the closest with the care she needs.

"She's not the first bear to have an MRI there," said Testa.  "But because they have the bear research center there, they have some great people that work with bears and vets."

Now the tests are done, Testa said she is waiting for the results to find out exactly what is wrong with Lucy, but they have an idea of what it isn't.

"From the fluid, they are assuming it's not cancer," said Testa.  "But they can't tell for sure without doing a biopsy, but they didn't find enough evidence to want to do a biopsy."

She says she expects to get the results sometime Thursday.

Until then, Testa said she is trying to trick Lucy into taking 52 pills a day, but so far she isn't having much luck.

"Yesterday was not very successful, I only got nine pills into her," said Testa. "Today we are up to 13 pills."

The Montana Grizzly Encounter is a grizzly bear rescue and education sanctuary.

Lucy was brought to Montana from a bear refuge in Sitka, Alaska, after she was found orphaned.

Testa said they were able to pay for the testing at WSU from recent generous donations from the community specifically for Lucy.

She said they raised about $7000 in just 24 hours.

Males are on a mission to find a female which is why they are a lot more active at this time.
