Secretary of Air Force Visits Malmstrom After Scandals

Posted: Updated:

Deborah Lee James, the Secretary of the Air Force, moved up a scheduled visit to Malmstorm Air Force base in light of the alleged drug investigation that revealed a wide spread cheating scandal.

"What happened was bad. Cheating is an absolute violation of our number one code of conduct which is integrity. This is a failure of the integrity of some of our airmen. It is not a failure of the nuclear mission which is important. It is strong, and I am confident in our ability to execute," says James.

James also met with Sen. Jon Tester and Congressman Steve Daines about the investigation and a plan to move forward.

"We've got a pile of people out there, 3,400 specifically with nearly 200 officers. Thirty four of which haven't been doing there job, but the rest have been. That's important to note," Sen. Tester says.

Congressman Daines adds, "The news was very disappointing to hear that cheating was happening, but I know when something like that is discovered it is important that corrective action is taken immediately. I was glad to hear the secretary say she is looking at a plan that will happen in a few weeks instead of dragging it out for months. That's the importance of this. Addressing it."

How is the situation being addressed? James says she is working with the base on the training and testing process. She is also meeting with the airmen in small groups to raise confidence and moral. She wants to drive home one goal in particular.

"Another message that I have been giving repeatedly is the importance of integrity and ethics because a compromise in that regard is not only harmful to you, but hurtful to your team, the Air Force and possibly national security. Its very serious what happened here, and we will get the bottom of it."

The investigation is still on going but the airmen involved in the cheating scandal have been stripped of their security clearance.

James is meeting with all three of the nuclear missile bases in this region to put a plan of action in place during the next few weeks to correct the problems the bases, Malmstrom in particular, are facing.
