We all love beef, but we also know its comes at a price, and this price only seems to be going up. According to USA Today, beef prices are supposed to increase 10% by this summer. But if farmers are only making 26% on their current earnings, where is the rest of the money going? Well, Chris Chrisiaens, with the Montana Farmer's Union, says its all comes down to, "The lack of beef available in Montana. We don't have a slaughter house where you can take a large number of beef, slaughter them, process them and get them to the grocery store."
To lower those super market costs, a summit was just held in Butte to discuss the future of Montana's agriculture. Chris told us that within a year or so he hopes we will have a slaughter house of our own. But until we do, he expects the prices on our beloved steaks are only going to get worse.
