FDA Changing Labels on Food Products

Posted: Updated:

Every time you pick up a food product at the store, it comes with a label that hasn't changed much over the past few decades.  That label may soon look different as the FDA considers a big switch-up.

Because nutrition knowledge has changed so much since the early 1990's, the Food and Drug Administration has decided the labels need to change along with it.  There are a variety of innovations that nutritionists and food experts wish to see.

Many would like an increased focus on numbers like calories, totals sugars and percentage of whole wheat.  Serving size is also a major sticking point and some want clarification as to what determines a normal serving size as well as moving away from metric units like grams. Differentiating between fats like normal, saturated and trans could also become a larger focus.

The FDA has submitted it's suggestions to the White House, but it is not yet clear which changes will become a permanent part of the new label.
