Americans Pee Wee Hockey Prepares for Wally Floen

Posted: Updated:

Before they can play in the American West Hockey League they've got to get through pee wee hockey first.

The Great Falls Americans Pee Wee Hockey team are 10-2 on the season and feeling good heading into the Wally Floen Memorial Pee Wee Tournament.

It's fun. We get to play teams we've never really played before," says 12-year-old Trevor Okes. "You get to play Canadian teams which will be fun."

The Pee Wee Ams will have their work cut out for them in the eleven team tournament that consists of the Helena Bighorns, Billings Bulls, Havre Ice Hawks and a hand full of Canadian squads. The Americans have plenty of momentum on their side but admit that there's still room for improvement.

Just getting used to lines and used to the teammates," says head coach Jason Dimatteo. "We're trying to find combinations that work well together. We feel like we're getting to that point right now."

They may be hockey players but they're 12-year-olds first. Coach Dimatteo says it's about having fun and the players want to enjoy themselves too. Especially when it comes to hitting each other.

"Because they don't get hurt and you don't get called for it," says 12-year-old defender Blake Sowers.

The three day tournament begins on Friday morning and will run all the way till the championship game on Sunday.
