Secretary Hagel Makes Surprise Calls to Malmstrom Officers

Posted: Updated:

While on a plane from Germany to Washington D.C., Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel surprised a number of officers on duty in the 341st Missile Wing's launch control centers by calling to talk with them personally about his continued faith in the nuclear mission.

Hagel took the time to personally call six officers. He spoke with them about his confidence in the nuclear mission and also took the time to listen to their concerns about the on-going investigations into the alleged drug and cheating scandals.

One officer said, "Secretary Hagel asked how I felt about everything that's going on, and I told him the workload has increased. It's hard to see friends involved. It was really humbling, and it showed that our mission is on his mind."

The officers relayed to Secretary Hagel that they hoped the nuclear review he ordered will result in improvements for the ICBM career field.

Hagel ended the calls by thanking all of the officers for their patience and extra work while the investigations continued.

Malmstrom Air Force Base had no further comments at this time on the two on-going investigations.
