On Friday the Roman Catholic Diocese of Helena filed for bankruptcy protection following two sexual abuse lawsuits filed in 2011 and yesterday during mass the Bishop of Helena apologized to the church.
Yesterday George Leo Thomas, the Catholic Bishop of Helena, read a letter of apology during mass on behalf of himself and the church expressing deep sorrow for the abuse that went on for decades. Thomas said the filing for bankruptcy is a step to closure for these cases. He continued that the church must move forward with the healing process, and this settlement will do just that. Out of the $15 million of the proposed settlement, $2.5 will come from the diocese, and with a yearly budget of $1.7 million this will bring set backs to the church, but he says the diocese plans on rebuilding funds over years.
