Carroll College Indoor Track Teams Crack Top-10

Posted: Updated:

Following an impressive showing last Friday at the Mountain States Open in Pocatello, ID both Carroll College Indoor Track Teams cracked the top-10 nationally after the second edition of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NAIA National Team Computer rankings were released Wednesday.

The Fighting Saints Men's team is ranked number seven nationally (previously 10th), with the Women's team moving up to ninth in the country (previously 13th).

"Our athletes have been working very hard and we have had some fantastic individual efforts so far. Our relay teams are performing at a high level right now as well; we are continuing to improve and with that our results will continue to climb," Carroll College head coach Harry Clark said.

The USTFCCCA NAIA National Championship Rankings are determined based on a formula of how many student-athletes teams have on the 2014 national descending order list for individual relay events and how highly they are ranked.

Carroll College was one of two schools from the Frontier Conference in each division to rank in the top-25. Dickinson State is 18th in the men's rankings and Lewis-Clark State comes in at 24th on the women's side.

Indiana Tech currently occupies the top spot in both the men's and women's rankings.

Individually, the Fighting Saints have five athletes from the men's side and two from the women's team ranking in the top-10 in their individual sports.

Easton Padden, the defending national champion in the pole vault is currently ranked number one in the country. Troy Solly is ranked fifth in the 800-meters, Eastern Washington transfer David Thor is ranked ninth. Stephan Delaney is seventh in the heptathlon; Lyle Pocha comes in at seventh in the 3000-meters and ninth in the mile run.

"Everyone knows what to expect from Easton, he has not disappointed and continues to be a great leader with his work ethic for our team," Clark said.

Rhianna Grossman's sterling season has her currently ranked number two in the 5000-meters, third in the 3000-meters and fourth in the mile. Kathleen Mulligan, the defending champion in the triple jump is ranked third currently.

"Rhianna has just been incredibly steady. We know her ability and drive, but she has definitely given us a great boost so far this winter," Clark added.

On the men's side, Carroll has the number one 4 x 800 relay team and the number one distance medley team; the Fighting Saints 4 x 400-relay team checks in as the tenth best.

The Carroll women have the third best distance medley group and the tenth best team time for the 4 x 400 relay.

Up next for Carroll College is a trip to Bozeman for the Montana State Invitational this coming Friday and Saturday.

"We know that we will see some very competitive teams and our athletes are always excited to see where they stack up against Big Sky competitors," Clark said.
