Helena Public School Board Votes to Run Bond on Fall Ballot

Posted: Updated:
HELENA -

Residents last night gave public comment saying the board was not transparent with the direction of the bond if it were to pass. The two bond options wouldn't be a too different but would be either sent to the ballot in Spring or Fall. The bond would renovate Central, Jim Darcy, and Warren Schools by fall of 2016.

"It is with great excitement that I recommend the Board approve a Fall 2014 election for an elementary bond addressing displaced students, technology, and with a finish date of 2016." said Superintendent Kent Kultgen.

After hearing more public comment tonight and discussion within the board, they unanimously voted to run the bond on a ballot in the Fall. Some opposed the bond being ran in the Fall, with concerns that it would cost more money, but the board believes it will give the public a better understanding on what exactly the bond is.

Earlier this month, Helena voters passed a school bond worth $63 million. This week, the school board has passed two levies. But this time, they did not require voter approval. There are exceptions on when school districts don’t need to go through voters for levies, and special education is one of them. In this case two levies, one for elementary schools and one for high schools, will provide the necessary extra funding for special education costs. Superintendent Jack Copps sa...
