Three Montana School Districts Owe the Government $7 Million

Posted: Updated:

Three Montana schools districts are looking at $7 million in debt to the U.S. Government.

Yellowstone's Gardiner School District 4 and 7 and Gallatin School District 69 have received special payments from the park program since 1948. The funding was designed to help the districts that serve children of park employees who live on untaxed federal land.

But those payments should have stopped in 1976, and now the department is legally obligated to recover the money.

Right now Montana's Congressional Delegation is seeking a waiver, saying the schools will be hard-pressed to repay the millions they owe.
