Transient Dies Due to Extreme Cold

Posted: Updated:

Butte-Silver Bow County Police say a 52-year-old transient man, found dead behind a Little Caesar's yesterday, died from exposure to Winter elements. FOX Montana's Rob Jesselson tells us more about the man who died, and also how you can stay safe while in the cold.

Just after 5 p.m. last night, Butte-Silver Bow County police found a 52-year-old transient man dead behind the Little Caesar's on Harrison Avenue. Upon examination, police say the man may have died from being out in the cold.

Sheriff Ed Lester says, "Two potential causes are hypothermia or some other type of medical issue. At this time, we're not sure. There's no foul play involved, we're certain of that."

Sheriff Lester says the California-native may have been in Butte for the last couple days and appeared to be lacking appropriate clothing.

"Not very well dressed for the weather. He wasn't wearing as much clothing as you would expect a transient to be wearing," says Sheriff Lester.

Clothing is something medical professionals say is extremely important when out in the cold.

Lack of clothing can lead to hypothermia, a possible cause of death for the man.
