Petition Urges Bishop to Reconsider Firing of Pregnant Teacher

Posted: Updated:

After an unmarried pregnant teacher was fired from a Catholic school in Butte protesters are fighting back with a petition to the Bishop.

Shaela Evenson a former teacher from Central Elementary School was fired in January after the diocese received an anonymous letter about her pregnancy. Today protesters brought back a petition with 20,000 signatures for Helena Bishop George Leo Thomas in the hope he would reconsider this decision, but supporters were not surprised when the bishop was not there to accept.

"I didn't think the bishop would be here, just because I know how busy he is and maybe because of the media blitz, but I was just hoping to be able that the Catholic Diocese would accept the petition and maybe through undevined mention areas that maybe they will reverse her decision." said Susan Hawthorne a friend of Evenson's.

Shortly after Bishop Thomas released a response saying "Catholic Schools are driven by a deep commitment to preserve and communicate the Catholic identity and mission and teachers in our catholic schools are an integral part to getting that done."

We will keep you up dated as this controversial decision unfolds.
