Prepare For Some Serious Winter Weather

Posted: Updated:

The calendar might suggest that spring is right around the corner, but winter in Montana is not going quietly into the night.  More significant winter weather is on the way.

"I think we'll probably start out with just the heavy snow, blowing snow being the main threat and that will eventually transition into some really cold wind chills as well this weekend.  There's portions of the state, the northern half, could see wind chills down around minus 50 on Saturday," said Nick Langlieb, a National Weather Service Meteorologist.

It's not just people who will have to deal with the cold.  Livestock could be in danger so farmers and ranchers need to take precautions.

"There could be extreme conditions for newborn livestock and young livestock over the weekend.  That's looking pretty likely with the combination of snow, wind and really low wind chills," said Langlieb.

If you're planning on hitting the road this weekend, you may want to reconsider.

"Travel will be pretty dangerous, especially with you get west of the divide into the really high winds and possible blizzard conditions," said Langlieb.

If you have to brave the weather while in your vehicle, make sure you have the right gear.

"Number one is a cell phone, a shovel, a bag of sand, blankets, some food, some water to drink always make sure you have a full tank of gas," said Langlieb.

And always tell someone where you're going.
