Argos Advance to Semifinals with Win Over No. 18 Northern

For the first time in seven meetings, the University of Great Falls men's basketball team defeated MSU-Northern in Frontier Conference play. The Argos beat the No. 3 seeded Lights 64-54 in the quarterfinal round of conference playoffs.

Marcel Towns had an explosive night for the sixth seeded Argos as he poured in 30 points. Naren Maynard was big for the Argos on the boards and also chipped in 10 points.

Great Falls trailed at half by four but fought back after the break. "I was real proud of the guys," said UGF head coach Steve Silsby. "They never gave in and played with a lot of heart. Everyone did their part and it was a great team effort."

The Argos defense proved to be a deciding factor in the game as Great Falls forced 13 turnovers which produced 19 points. UGF only had three turnovers on the night. It was the third straight game that Great Falls held the Lights to 54 points.

Shawn Williams would hit a three late in game to put up the Argos up by eight. A few turnovers by Northern and key free throws would seal the deal for the hot-streaking Great Falls squad.

The Argos defeated at the then 10th ranked Rocky Mountain College in their final game of the regular season.

"We are going to prepare this week for Rocky and look to keep the momentum going," added Silsby.

Great Falls will meet Rocky Mountain in the semifinal round of the conference playoffs on Friday, March 7 in Billings. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. with the winner advancing to the final and a possible automatic bid to the National Tournament.
