Experts Say a Snowboarder is Behind Friday's Avalanche

Posted: Updated:

A report from the Missoula Avalanche Center as just been released, claiming that the Mount Jumbo slide, that destroyed two homes and buried three people, was triggered by a snowboarder.

Avalanche experts say strong east winds and heavy snowfall from the blizzard created dangerous avalanche conditions on Mount Jumbo, Mount Sentinel and other steep slopes.

The snowboarder triggered a large slab avalanche that ran to the valley floor.

Emergency responders and hundreds of nearby residents quickly mobilized to assist with search efforts.

Avalanche experts report "high" avalanche danger to continue in the Rattlesnake and Southern Swan, along with the Mission Mountains north of Missoula.

They also say the danger is "considerable" in parts of the Bitterroot Mountains.
