More Than Fifty Priests To Be Named In Helena Abuse Settlement

Posted: Updated:

More than 50 priests will be named as sexual abusers if a legal settlement is approved, according to the attorney for plaintiffs suing the Roman Catholic Diocese of Helena.  Attorney Tim Kosnoff says that the victims want the alledged abusers to be identified in public.

The potential settlement agreement would have the diocese website list all credibly accused clergy members on their website.

As a part of two lawsuits, over 350 victims have claimed they were abused as children in Western Montana.  These abuses took place between the 1940s and 1970s, though most of the accused priests are now deceased.

The U.S. Bankruptcy Court is now deciding the proposed $15 million dollar settlement after the diocese filled for Chapter 11 reorganization earlier this year.

Additional lawsuits against the Diocese of Great Falls-Billings are pending with 50 victim claiming abuse.
