Two Officers Found At Fault Over Briggs Escape

Posted: Updated:

In regards to the escape of Kevin Briggs from prison, a Bozeman police report found two officers failed to perform their duties adequately.  The officers allegedly left the sexual assault suspect unsupervised for a long enough time that he was able to escape an interview room.

Capt. Dave McManus said the officer in charge of watching Briggs during the morning of February 1st wrongly stopped monitoring the suspect after overhearing a phone conversation.  In the conversation, the officer thought he heard an indication that Briggs was being taken to jail.  McManus also found the shift supervisor didn't verify a civilian employee's statement that the suspect wasn't being monitored.

Evidently, the departments signal someone leaving the interview room is leaning a chair against the door and McManus says they need to come up with a better method.

Briggs was recaptured in Portland, Oregon on February 21st.
