The Government Shutdown's Affect on National Parks

Posted: Updated:

Montana is known for our beautiful national parks. They bring in people from all around the country and its huge for our economy. But how did it fair through the government shut down?

To put things in perspective, 2012 was the biggest visitor year in the history of Yellowstone National Park. This contributed to the $403.4 million made by Montana parks that year. With a ten dollar return for ever one dollar invested nationwide.

But what about Yellowstone this year? The Obama Administration says we lost 8 million visitors and $414 million in spending during the shutdown.

Al Nash, a park spokesperson, says, "We certainly had the potential to see tens of thousands of more visitors to Yellowstone. Despite all the challenges we saw in 2013, it was the fifth highest visitation year in the parks history."
