Protect Yourself form Identity Theft

Posted: Updated:

It is National Consumer Protection Week, and reporter Katie Chen found out what steps to take should you become a victim of identity theft.

Identity theft is painful, but taking action immediately can help you if you are a victim.  Stockman Bank's Wayne Nelson says the first step is to stop your credit card or banking accounts. You can also call a Credit Bureau, Experian, Equifax, or Transunion, to freeze your credit.

"The other thing you can do with those is a fraud alert so you can be contacted and anyone that pulls from the credit bureau that is legitimate, they'll see the fraud alert statement from the credit bureau and know that there are some issues and you'll be contacted," says Nelson.

Nelson also says filing a police report is necessary.

He tells us, "You have to have a cause. Show that there really was a fraud event and show that you're serious about it. That's why you're filing a police report, and everybody can act on that. That is formal. It's real, and folks are going to listen to you."

Nelson says if you go months without contacting your bank or credit card issuer about suspicious activity, you may have to share in the loss or eat all of it.

"Watch your credit card statements, and your checking statements. You're going to be looking for unauthorized withdrawals, unauthorized charges, and you're responsible for notifying the credit card company or the bank of those unauthorized charges very quickly."

Also, be sure to keep a record of all calls you make and who you spoke to regarding the issue.
