Officials in southwestern Montana say an 18-year-old Minnesota man has died after he was buried in an avalanche while snowmobiling.

The Park County Sheriff's Office says it received a report of a snowmobiler buried in the Daisy Pass and Crown Butte area near Cooke City about 4 PM Tuesday.

The victim, from Lake Lillian, Minnesota, was found under about 6 feet of snow shortly after 5 PM. His name hasn't been released.

Undersheriff Scott Hamilton says the victim was with a group of six others. One other member of the party was knocked off his snowmobile but not buried. He was slightly injured.

The man is the fifth Montana avalanche victim this year. The Colorado Avalanche Information Center says 23 people have died in avalanches nationwide since December 26, 2013.
