More Deaths Linked to Recalled General Motors Cars

Posted: Updated:

General Motors is recalling 1.6 million cars that have been linked to over 300 deaths from malfunctioning airbags and 12 deaths from faulty ignition switches.

1st Ave Auto Body Shop president Kenneth LaMott is no stranger to the feeling of being in a car where the ignition suddenly shuts down.

"Its a helpless feeling. You have to really focus on getting your car to stop and traffic. Its not going to slow down just because you are. Its not a good feeling."

Although LaMott's faulty ignition was not in one of the cars GM is recalling, he says he is familiar with the situation and the dangers associated with the malfunctioning cars.

"It locks everything up in the car: the steering, the ignition, the airbags, and that is the reason for the recall as I understand it."

LaMott adds that even if not driving a General Motors car, there is something many people carry that could be hurting their ignition -- too many keys on the key chain.

"Its too heavy. Ignition systems weren't made for five, six or twenty keys on your system."

If you are driving one of the recalled General Motors cars, the company is offering a free loaner car and $500 to buy or lease a new GM vehicle. You can find out more on the General Motors recall website.
