Learn the True Meaning of St. Patrick's Day

Posted: Updated:
GREAT FALLS -

St. Patrick's Day is a catholic holiday which is celebrated by all despite any faith difference. But since originally being named a calendar holiday the true meaning of the Irish holiday has had some of it's meaning lost.

"I couldn't tell you, honestly I moved from out of the country so," says khaldoon Rashid.

"I don't know. I'm Irish, but I just kind of know that he had like the four leaf clover," says Mazison Wilhelm.

I spoke with university of great falls theology professor Dr. Dan McGuire as to what exactly is the true meaning of saint Patrick's Day.

"The true meaning of saint Patrick's Day is celebrating a Saint who in his conversion experience developed a love for the people who had once enslaved him," explains Dr. McGuire.

Most folks remember most the legend of St. Patrick banishing snakes from the emerald isle, however there were no real snakes on the island to begin with due to it's climate and the fact that after the Ice age glacier receded, the English Channel cut off the ability for snakes to make it to Ireland. Dr. McGuire says the story is actually a metaphor.

"Of course the religious significance of the snakes, the serpent from the garden of Eden, that the one who brought Christianity to the Irish island banished the snakes. So whether that is historically a factual reason for why there is no snakes on an island nation? who knows," says Dr. McGuire.

According to Dr. McGuire the reason for the parades and the drinking of green beer is in fact an American creation by the oppressed Irish people coming to the America to use in heritage celebration. But the question remains why do we wear green shamrocks?

"He was trying to explain concepts like the trinity which are very difficult theologically to explain to a very simple people and so he looked around to explain and in hand a shamrock just as this is one plant, that it has 3 leaves but they are all one, the father the son and the holy spirit are one god in 3 person," says Dr. McGuire.

Ultimately St. Patrick's Day has become a great way to celebrate the rich Irish culture and that may be the best meaning to celebrate.

ENTIAT, Wash. - A burn out operation is planned for Tuesday morning in an effort to establish a secure line in the bottom of the canyon where the Mills Canyon Fire is burning. Burning material rolling downhill and igniting spot fires on the north side of Swakane Canyon have caused concerns and indicate a vulnerability to a fire escape and repeatedly expose firefighters to very steep terrain and rolling material.
