Rwandan Genocide Survivor Speaks in Lewistown

Posted: Updated:

Over the weekend the Lewistown community had the chance to hear from someone many would consider a survivor and a hero.  ABC/FOX Montana's Emily Scarlett made the trip to meet the woman she describes as phenomenal.

One million people killed, families ripped apart, all due to the brutal Rwandan genocide. This mass slaughter, which began in 1994, was the result of an ongoing conflict between the Tutsi and Hutu tribes.

Immaculee Ilibagiza survived by hiding in a tiny bathroom for 91 days with seven other women, and shares her story of perseverance, faith, and forgiveness in her best selling autobiography, "Left to Tell."

Now she serves an inspirational speaker traveling around the world, and even made her way to Lewistown, Montana, where ABC/FOX Montana's Emily Scarlett had the honor of introducing Immaculee to a crowd of hundreds of people, just waiting to hear her story.

For nearly three months, she hid in a tiny bathroom with seven other women, as members of the Hutu tribe relentlessly searched the home for hidden Tutsis, like Immaculee.

Even after finding her way to safety, a new nightmare began, as she learned her parents and two of her three brothers had been killed in the massacre. Still, Immaculee chose to forgive, saying the anger was killing her like a poisonous cancer.

Immaculee has since written a number of books about her experience and the power of forgiveness.
