Today is National History Day

GREAT FALLS -

Today is National History Day and to celebrate the students at Great Falls High School are holding their annual War Fair.

"And then they research the topic and then they will present it on a day like today, it's in conjunction with National History Day there is a national competition through NHD," says Teacher Geoff Habel.

With his second time in the War Fair Joseph Bakly looks forward to not only teaching others history but learning it as well.

"I'm actually apart of it and I know a whole lot more about and easily relate it to and that's what you enjoy doing what you relate to and you enjoy doing it more and just learn more stuff about it," says Bakly.

One of the things I found surprising myself was the fact that Dr. Suess wrote in many war time political statements into his book. Ariel Leach and her partner picked this project for the same reason that surprised me.

"When we first saw this it shocked me because I grew up loving Doctor Suess and knowing that he did more than just write books and makes really good movies it just caught my attention and it just shocked me and we thought it would be good to put it out there and show the world what else he did," says Leach.

The judges of teachers and Malmstrom and Air National Guardsmen play a vital role as some of the top selected projects go on to a national competition.

"every year kids end up going to DC if they win,"

According to everybody involved the War Fair is a great way to help to best memorialize our history.

According to scanner traffic, around 9:00 Sunday evening a raft overturned in the Missouri River, causing several people to go into the water.  It is unclear at this time how the raft flipped, or how many people were in it. All passengers but one were able to get back into the raft safely; scanner traffic indicates the one who couldn't get back in was able to swim to an island. Lt. Governor Mike Cooney toured the flooded Sun River community today, June 22nd. Flooding began in the town earlier in the week, washing away roads, flooding homes, and trapping some people inside their town. Lt. Gov. Cooney spoke to several families, including the Opheim's. Right now, it's difficult to say how much money it will cost to repair roads and homes, but officials are working to find an answer.
