Great Falls Population is on the Rise

Posted: Updated:
GREAT FALLS -

We now know things are looking pretty good here in Great Falls all thanks to some new information released by the US Census Bureau and the Montana Department of Labor. Cascade County has a lot to celebrate today as our population is showing some positive recent trends.

"Exactly! Great Falls and Cascade County as a whole has finally been growing in population after we have seen several years of decline," says Great Falls Development Authority Vice President, Jolene Bach.

A US census says that last year our population grew from a little over 81,000 people to now over 82,000 people and that puts us just 45 people away from the highest peak in the 1990's.

"So we are very excited that Cascade County has actually grown since 2012 to 2013 by 600 people," explains Bach.

To add to the good news today the Department of Labor has announced a positive shift in employment rates for our County.

"So data released today by the Department of Labor show our labor force topped our old record by 200 jobs,"  adds Bach.

In fact back in the beginning of January, Brett Doney, CEO of the Great Falls Development Authority issued a challenge to all local business's to create more jobs in the new year. So far the challenge is being well received.

"Apparently the challenge that Brett put out at the beginning of the year is going well, because people are creating jobs," says Bach.

The Great Falls Development Authority predicts that in the next few years we will continue to break records both in jobs and population.

After the state of Montana struggled with a surprising $227 million budget deficit in 2017, many are wondering why the state's revenue is so weak at a time when the economy is growing.  An economist says it's largely due to Montana's reliance on income tax. The Great Falls City Commission is releasing an updated proposal for a park district. This new version comes after the first proposal did not make it past voters last year. The biggest change is the amount of money the city is asking for. Instead of 2.27 million dollars from the taxpayers, it will be 1.5million dollars. Meaning the maximum property owners will pay in a year would be roughly 22 dollars a year, or less than 2 dollars a month. The parks department says this proposal n...

Police say they have several leads and are working hard to find the criminals and get the machine back to its rightful owner, but one patron said he doesn't think they were after the cash, but instead the pin numbers stored inside that machine, which could lead to a bigger problem for the bar and grille.

The suspects got away after leading officers with the Lewis and Clark county Sheriff's Department on a dangerous chase along Lincoln Road after they broke into the Causeway Chalet and stole the bar's ATM.
