Montana Congressional redistricting? Easy in Montana

Posted: Updated:

HELENA, Mont. (AP) - Montana is one of just seven states where the fight over how to redraw the congressional district map every 10 years wasn't an issue last time around.

That's because Montana is among that small group of states with only one congressional district.

The reapportionment of U.S. House seats is based on the U.S. census. The 2010 census put the state's population at 989,415, which was not enough to gain a second congressman but left Montana with the largest congressional district in the nation.

State officials now estimate the state's population at more than 1 million.

Montana had two congressional seats until one was taken away after the 1990 census.

Redrawing Montana's legislative map was done by a panel consisting of two Republicans, two Democrats and a retired state Supreme Court justice.
