Carroll Saints New Soccer Coach Excited to Build Program

Posted: Updated:

Yesterday we reported that Carroll College announced that Doug Mello would be their first ever men's soccer head coach, well today we hear from the man himself.

Mello has coached a national collegiate record 1,154 games, winning over 700 of them.

Carroll's main concern when conducting their coaching search was that it needed a coach that could build the program from the ground up. Mello has that exact experience that Carroll was looking for. He built both the men's and women's soccer programs at both Siena Heights University (Mich.) and Luther College (Iowa).

"One thing we were looking for in both our soccer and our softball position were coaches that have done that," said Saints Athletic Director Bruce Parker. "Have built programs from the ground up. I don't want to try and reinvent the wheel, I just want to get a good wheel in here."

"I kind of know what it takes." said Mello via phone interview. "I had a formula for success that I'm going to stick to of recruiting and reaching out to the people that I know can help. And I know I can put a competitive team of good student athletes on the pitch come the fall."
