New Amtrak Schedule Could Be Permanent

Posted: Updated:

Officials are trying to keep the Empire Builder passenger train running on time.

Amtrak says that freight traffic along the rails has caused the Empire Builder to be "unacceptably late."

It also hasn't helped that this winter the tracks have been plagued with derailments and avalanches.

With the new schedule changes, trains heading east from Portland and Seattle will leave almost three hours earlier, and westbound trains will run about an hour later than usual.

"In the Flathead Valley, the train is going to be coming in a lot earlier than it used to and that is a big change," said Marc Magliari, a spokesman for Amtrak.

The changes start on April 15.

Magliari says everyone who's already bought a ticket for after that date has been notified of the new timetable.

He also says this change could become permanent if it keeps the trains on time.
