Malmstrom Air Force Base Ready to Move Past Scandals

Col. Tom Wilcox, the new commander of the 341st Missile Wing at Malmstrom Air Force Base, said it has been a tough time for the missile wing as the bad news from multiple scandals seemed to just keep coming.

The problems for Malmstrom started back in August when the 341st Missile Wing got an unsatisfactory rating during a safety and security inspection. After re-inspection in October, Malmstrom scored perfect.

Days later, reports of mishandled nuclear arms surfaced after officers left doors opened that protected the missiles.

"Sometimes I suspect you feel maybe that no one cares or that maybe no one is paying attention to you but we are. And also to reemphasize how important your mission is. How important your work is. How we depend on your professionalism and how you do your work," said Secretary of Defense, Chuck Hagel.

Malmstrom appeared to be getting back on the right track especially when Commander of the 341st Missile Wing, Col. Robert Stanley, was nominated by President Obama for the rank of brigadier general.

However, shortly after the nomination, the base found itself in hot water again as two officers that worked with the nuclear missiles were investigated for the possession of illegal drugs.

Through the drug probe, the Air Force discovered a widespread cheating ring.

"This is absolutely unacceptable behavior and it is completely contrary to our core values in the Air Force. And as everybody here knows, the number-one core value for us is integrity," said Secretary of the Air Force, Deborah Lee James.

It was revealed that commanders were putting too much pressure on the officers.

James added, "They feel driven to score hundred percent all of the time because commanders are using test scores as top if not only decision as to who gets promoted."

As a result of the scandals, Col. Stanley decided to retired.

Now, Col. Tom Wilcox has stepped up to the plate as the new commander of the troubled 341st Missile Wing.

Col. Wilcox said a smooth and respectful transition is one of his three main goals for Malmstrom and the 341st Missile Wing.

The other goals he is working on include team work to keep the nuclear mission going and precision over perfection.
