WASHINGTON D.C. - Senator Patty Murray asked Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz some tough questions  Wednesday about Hanford cleanup in the face of proposed major budget cuts.

Senator Murray pressed Moniz for answers about progress on the Waste Treatment Plant, but she didn't get much out of him.

Murray said she and Moniz have a shared goal to treat Hanford waste, but after years of waiting for a comprehensive plan from the Department of Energy on the WTP she wants to know the path forward.

The WTP has been under construction for over a decade and has technical issues that aren't resolved.

Murray asked Moniz if he's confident about his phased approach forward and told him no more waiting.

"We are past time for discussions. The state and I need to see action from your department, be that on this frame work or something else. It's time for us to move on this," said Murray.

Moniz said he's very confident about a phased approach forward.

But when Murray asked Moniz if the DOE would be able to meet the legally required clean up deadlines, with the $98 million dollars in cuts to Hanford cleanup under the president's budget, he didn't have a solid answer.

Moniz told Murray that he'd have to get back to her on that one.

Murray asked for a written response soon.
