Starting Spots on the Line for Saints Spring Scrimmage

Posted: Updated:
HELENA -

Spring practices are winding down for the Carroll Saints leading into Saturday's scrimmage, and there's one common idea amongst players and coaches.

"We're just looking for competition."

One such competition is at the second cornerback spot. An important role in Saints head coach Mike Van Diest's defense.

"You're on an island out there a lot," said Van Diest "It's not about assignments, it's about taking care of the best receiver. In this conference last year, of all the All Conference receivers last year, there were six of them, first team and second team, only one was a senior, Oran Johnson out of Montana State Northern, every other great receiver in this conference is coming back."

Another important battle going on is for the fifth starter on the offensive line.

"It depends on what we're going to do," said Van Diest. "Ryan Armstrong started at right guard for us last year. He could move to tackle, he was a starting tackle the year before. He can play tackle or guard so we need somebody that can give us a little bit of flexibility."

As coach said, this game could be a deciding factor for many position battles going on this Spring, but maybe none more important that the quarterback battle between J.T. Linder and Mac Roche.

"Working on timing with the receivers because it's easy when we're going seven on seven when there's no line to throw stuff and complete it, but it's pretty difficult when it's game situations," said red shirt sophomore quarterback Mac Roche

"Being able to sustain drives is going to be critical and what he wants," added red shirt freshman quarterback J.T. Linder." I mean third down conversions and things like that. He's mentioned that, and I thought Doc did a tremendous job of that last year so if we can keep a drive a live, keep the defense off the field that'll be critical."

We'll see if coach's words sunk into his players Saturday afternoon. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
