Great Falls Exchange Club Awards Scholarships

Posted: Updated:
GREAT FALLS - Two Cascade County teens were honored with scholarship awards from the Exchange Club of Great Falls.

Shelby Koppany was named the Exchange Club's Youth of the Year at a luncheon Wednesday and given a one thousand dollar scholarship for her involvement in the community.

The organization gives out a Youth of the Month award throughout the year and then chooses a Youth of the Year from that pool.

"I participated in a lot of community service through the school. I was involved in student government, and we have done food drives like the Thanksgiving food drive which provides food for people less fortunate than we are. I also had a lot of fun participating in community service at the local rec center, and I was a volunteer at a volleyball camp for young girls," Shelby said of all the community involvement that got her nominated for the scholarship.

The other award given out at Wednesday's luncheon was presented to Randi Thibert, who won the ACE Award, which is a thousand dollar scholarship given to students, who are able to overcome a hardship and succeed.

Randi spoke about the troubles she experienced at home while keeping good grades at school.

"Ever since I was younger, we had problems with abuse and neglect. My mom was heavily addicted to drugs, in and out of jail, so it was always me, my dad and siblings together," said Randi.

Randi graduated from high school early this December and plans on attending Montana State University in the Fall. She was honored to get some help paying for college.

"I am so excited this scholarship. I am just so thankful and its really going to help out a lot with college," Randi said.

Both girls will go on to compete at the district level of the scholarship program for a chance to win more scholarship money.
