Yellowstone County Coroners identify the two Billings women who died from drowning after their car crashed into a canal near Stewart Park. Assistant Coroner Chad Fehr says Laura Madden was the driver and Sarah Breitenstein was the passenger. They are both 36 years old.
Lt. Mark Cady with Billings Police say parks department workers saw a red car in the canal around 6:30 this morning. Members of the Billings Police and the Fire Department opened the back door to the car and saw a body. They say the car appeared to have been in the water for a while. The US Water Rescue Dive Team arrived and pulled out the two bodies from the car.
Lt. Cady says the car drove through the yard along the side of the fence. He says it was also connected to another call they got in the morning.
"We did have a call from one of the women's significant other earlier wanting to know if we had any contact," Lt. Cady said. "If there'd been a wreck or an accident or something like that because she had not come home and wanted to know if we knew anything about that. So unfortunately this is not the way we wanted to find them."
The investigation is ongoing. Police say at this time they do not know if alcohol was a factor in the accident.
