Slain Exchange Student's Father Arrives In Montana

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE: HELENA, Mont. (AP) - A German consulate spokeswoman says the father of a 17-year-old exchange student who was shot and killed by a homeowner has arrived in Montana.

Spokeswoman Julia Reinhardt says Celal Dede and a family friend arrived Tuesday from Germany to recover the body of Diren Dede.

She says a consulate official from San Francisco also is in Missoula to assist the father and to pressure authorities to complete a thorough investigation into the shooting.

She says local law enforcement has been cooperative.

Markus Kaarma is charged with deliberate homicide in the early Sunday shooting of Diren Dede. Prosecutors allege Kaarma shot into the garage without warning after an intruder tripped sensors he had installed.

Reinhardt says the consulate considers the shooting to be "completely out of proportion" to the risk Kaarma faced.

UPDATE: HELENA, Mont. (AP) - The attorney for a Montana man charged in the shooting death of a 17-year-old exchange student in his garage says the man is afraid to leave his home after receiving death threats.

Markus Kaarma posted a $30,000 bond on a charge of deliberate homicide in the death of Diren Dede of Hamburg, Germany.

Attorney Paul Ryan said Tuesday that Kaarma, his partner Janelle Pflager and their 10-month-old baby are now captives in their own home after receiving the threats.

Prosecutors allege Kaarma fired a shotgun into the garage four times after Dede tripped sensors outside. Dede was struck in the head and arm.

Sunday's shooting has reignited debate over a Montana law that gives a person the right use force to protect his or her own home from a threat.

MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) - Authorities say a 17-year-old boy who was shot and killed over the weekend by a Montana man who claimed the teen had broken into his garage was a foreign exchange student from Germany.

Police in Missoula have arrested a 29-year-old man on suspicion of deliberate homicide in the death of Diren Dede of Hamburg, Germany. Dede was a junior at Big Sky High School in Missoula.

Officers responded to the reported shooting just before 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

Markus Kaarma told officers he found an intruder in his garage after an alarm went off, and he shot him with a shotgun. Dede later died of his injuries.

Sgt. Travis Welsh says it will be up to the county attorney's office to determine if Kaarma will face criminal charges. Welsh said officers would not arrest someone without probable cause that a crime had been committed.

The shooting is still under investigation.
