Saints Track and Field Team Stepping Up to Competition

Posted: Updated:
HELENA -
"They're excited for us to come to meets. Where as it used to be a pain in the rear."

Every weekend the Carroll Saints Track and Field team is considered the underdog. Coming from the NAIA, most people would roll their eyes at them competing with division one programs such as Oregon, Washington State, U of M, and MSU, but to Carroll, it's the best thing that could have happened to them.

"It's really good for us," said Saints head coach Harry Clark. "The level of competition with having Montana, Montana State, Eastern Washington, Idaho State in our back yard is it gives our kids to run against really quality athletes every weekend. And so when we go to our national meet, they're not intimidated and they're ready to go."

It's not all about nationals, though. Carroll has been in the moment. Like Troy Solly winning the 800 meter at Washington State, or Ben Culter taking the 400 meter at U of M, or how about Kathleen Mulligan taking first at the women's triple jump at Montana State.

"That's what we're kind of doing now," said Clark. "The intimidation bus is starting to roll and we're getting there. So that's what we like to do. They see that black and purple on the track man they know something is coming down."

With two meets left in Missoula, as of now Carroll has 22 national qualifiers. And between the qualifiers and the competition, Carroll is starting to become an elite recruiting program.

"We get a lot of that too. It's like 'Oh you got that kid. Oh you got that kid?' And the decision now between Montana and Carroll, where there didn't used to a decision, or Montana, Carroll, and Montana State, but we're always in the mix now," said Clark.

Four years in, and the Saints track program is certainly in the mix, very quickly losing that label of 'underdog'.
