Local Elementary Students Learning Hydroelectric Power

Posted: Updated:
Hydroelectric Power, it's what runs our region and the concepts can be a little difficult to understand, but all that goes along with what's behind me is actually within the understanding of some local elementary school students.

You can only get so close to the real thing in the classroom, so when budget cuts threatened the annual Lincoln Elementary field trip to the dam, P-P-L stepped in to bridge the financial gap.  This was especially important to Operator Maintenance Journeyman Chris Helgeson, who was inspired during his own fourth grade field trip years ago.

"You know with all the budget cuts that everyone's going through in the last few years, especially for the school district, I think that it's really important that PPL Montana stepped up and continued the fourth grade tours cause it means a lot to me.  I didn't want any fourth graders to miss it.  It really meant a lot to me as a kid, so growing up, I kind of wanted to carry that on," said Helgeson.

While the young students may not be ready for the physics of engineering, they're starting small  with their own water wheels.

Check out the video above to see all the interesting and funny things the kids said and did.
