Hillyard Man Faces Hundreds Of Dollars In Fines Over Basketball Hoop

SPOKANE, Wash. -

A North Spokane man expressed his frustration on Friday after the city sent him an obstruction notice about his basketball hoop taking up half of his sidewalk. His hoop has been there for more than five years, but recently someone filed a complaint and said that they want it to move off the sidewalk. If Jason Coffman does not move the hoop he will have to pay a $539 fine.

The city of Spokane said that the obstruction notice first asks that people voluntarily comply, but if they do not they have to pay. Coffman said that his hoop encourages his kids to be active and get away from video games in the summer months. Coffman says he does not understand why this is a problem after five years in the neighborhood.

“This is where the kids come to play,” Jason Coffman said. “We're trying to figure out why we were singled out for our basketball hoop specifically.”

There are two other hoops within a block of the Coffman home on the 2300 block of East Decatur in Hillyard. As of Friday the other two have not received obstruction complaints.
