Saints Track and Field Team Ready for Nationals

Posted: Updated:
HELENA -
The Carroll Saints are sending 22 athletes to this year's NAIA outdoor track and field nationals in Gulf Shores, Alabama. And will face an opponent for the first time this season: the heat.

"It's going to be 92 with 98% humidity," said Saints head coach Harry Clark. "So what we're going to have to do down there is they're not gong to be able to sit and watch the meet all day. They're going to have to go do their event and rest up for finals."

The Saints know they will face the best the NAIA has to offer this weekend, but are confident because of the competition they've faced throughout the season.

"We get really good competition going against MSU, U of M, all these big schools up here," said hurdler Stephan Delaney." So it really makes a difference that we have that competition week in and week out. So we're going to go down there and do it like it's a regular meet. Stay relaxed, stay focused and just do our best, and we're going to do good."

"We're with all those D-1 schools," added 4x4 runner Mallery Knoll. "We hardly see any NAIA schools other than UGF and MSU-B, I guess they're D-2. So we hardly see any NAIA schools."

This year's class of seniors at nationals isn't your typical bunch. It's the inaugural class from the first year of Saints track and field back in 2011. And they're ready to leave it all on the table.

"It's kind of like I have nothing to lose so I'm just going to go all out," said senior 4x4 runner Nicole Davey. "Hopefully that'll be enough. Just put everything on the line and just say 'this is my last shot,' so why not put everything out there?"

"Just kind of puts a lot of pressure on me and everything," added senior pole vaulter Easton Padden. "I'm tied for first right now going in so it's kind of my last chance to do something big so I've got to stay really mentally focused and remain prepared."

So even though the climate might take some time to get used to, the Saints will be looking to heat up and bring home a national championship.
