Townsend Tennis Taking Six To State in Missoula

HELENA -
Following a perfect sweep of their divisional round, collecting all six of the spots for state, Townsend girls tennis team is making history!

"As far as I know that's never happened in our division before."

It's hard enough to get a couple of girls to state, which is what makes their feat so impressive. The Lady Bulldogs clinched all four of the singles, and both doubles spots. It's an an achievement they attribute to their work in the off season.

"We're always out here over the summer or on the weekends," said senior singles player Latisha Marcum. "We're constantly out here sometimes, like during the summer, we're out here until 10 o'clock at night just hitting as many balls as we can."

"They work on tennis before the season, after the season, in the summer," said Townsend head coach John O'Dell. "It's a belief we instill and most of these girls have played varsity three years."

Some have been building camaraderie than that. One of Townsend's doubles teams headed to state are from the same family tree.

"It helps playing together and we just started last year playing together, but we've played before the season together," said senior doubles player Mariah Saltzman. "We grew up together, we're second cousins so that helps I guess. And it's just really fun."

"We've been through thick and thin I guess you could say," added senior doubles player Kasee Clark. "But I guess we've always been there for each other and I think being tennis partners has kind of helped our relationship on a different note."

Townsend hasn't won a state title since winning back to back in 2008 and 2009. And having six chances at this year's tournament, they'll be looking to put themselves back in the record books.
