Customs and Border Protection Presents Daily Activities

Posted: Updated:
GREAT FALLS - When people hear about Customs and Border Patrol, they think illegal aliens or terrorism, but today U.S. Customs and Border Protection presented to the media what it is that they do and it is more than you think.

Agent Craig Duff said that "we are all a part of Homeland Security. We are what we like to call the frontline of protection of our borders."

As Duff mentioned to us though, it goes beyond borders, as border patrol operations goes pretty far from the United States border itself.  Duff says they cover 456 miles of U.S.-Canada border, and cover parts of Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah.

Statistics show that numbers are down nationwide in apprehensions and seizures, which is attributed to three priorities of all sectors, including the one in Havre.

Duff said "our priorities, securing the border, which is our number one goal, securing and facilitating, and sustaining investment in people and capabilities."

With 90% of Canada's population living within 100 miles of the U.S.-Canada border, one thing that is a necessity to succeed is working with not just local organizations, but the law enforcement agencies of Canada as well. With better technology in today's world, that is much easier.

Office of Field Operations plays a key role as well. While their number one mission is "anti-terrorism," they take part in facilitating travel of goods which includes counterfeiting and trademark violations.

The over 200 agents in the Havre sector are constantly alert, whether it is a simple suspicion of drugs, to a person trying to carry out an attack, they are ready for any situation.
