Bruins, Bengals Looking for Experience at State Track Meet

Posted: Updated:
As the Helena Bengals head to state this weekend, they know where their strengths lie.

"Our strength has really been on the track this year, although we have qualified some really good field events as well," said Capital head coach Sheila Williams.

She's not kidding, the Bengals track team features some top five runners in the state, including Callie Kanthack, who may be the favorite in a few races.

"there are so many girls in this state that are great at sprinting," said Kanthack. "There's depth this year. We've got a lot of girls that are in the mid twelves so it's going to be a challenge, but I really want that two title."

On Helena's boys side, they're certainly no slouches either.

"I think there's a very realistic chance of us winning state," said Helena distance runner Aiden Reed. "We have fantastic sprinters and strong field events, and we have a very solid distance crew this year. So I think it's definitely obtainable."

On the other side of town Capital boasts a young team, that's strengths lie in its field events.

"We've got a lot of young kids that haven't been there," sad Capital coach Shirley Chesterfield-Stanton. "So they're going to see this for the first time. When you walk onto the track tomorrow during the warm up and there's going to hundreds of people out there. It's going to be bigger than anything they've seen. All the class C schools. So they're excited. They're nerves are running pretty good but they're handling it well."

"Everyone is normally nervous during a track meet, but it's mostly exciting because this one is state," added shot put competitor Paula Therriault.

"I've been high jumping forever so I've always wanted to go to state in that," said Maggie Settle. "And I started long jumping this year and being able to go to state in that is like 'Oh my goodness.'"

Excitement is mounting in the Queen city and we'll see how many titles these crosstown rivals can bring home.
