KELLOGG, Idaho - Shasta Orsburn is mourning the death of her fiancé, Nick Rounds, one day after he was killed in the Sunshine Mine. "We were planning to spend the rest of our lives together. Have more babies," Orsburn told KHQ's Gabe Cohen on Tuesday. "An amazing guy. Always goofy, wanted to play jokes on people. Wasn't a serious guy." Rounds spent his whole life in Silver Valley and leaves behind a 13-year-old son and a 6-year-old step-daughter.
KELLOGG, Idaho - The man killed in Monday's mining accident  at the Sunshine Mine in Silver Valley, Idaho has now been identified as Nick Rounds. According to the Mining Safety & Health Administration, the accident occurred around 2pm on Monday when Rounds and one other miner were on top of a skip working in a shaft. As they were getting ready to move the skip, the skip moved before Rounds was ready and he became caught between the skip and the shaft. Mine Safety and Health Administration officials are continuing to investigate this incident.

Nick Rounds was born and raised in Silver Valley and attended Wallace High School. He was engaged and soon to be married as well to Shasta Orsburn.

In May of 1972, the mine was the site of one of the worst mining disasters in American history when 91 workers died from smoke inhalation or carbon monoxide poisoning when a fire broke out. Today, a 13-foot-tall metal miner stands along I-90 as a memorial to those who lost their lives that day.

The mine operated under the Sunshine Mining Company until it closed back in 2001. It was restarted six years later by the Sterline Mining Company until they filed for bankruptcy protection in 2009. The mine was then purchased by Silber Opportunity Partners in 2010 and folded into Sunshine Silver Mines Corporation, according to the company's website. The ore production unit reopened this year.

This is a developing story and we will continue to update you as soon as we get more information.
