John Lewis has won the Democratic nomination for Montana's sole U.S. House seat, defeating former Montana House Speaker John Driscoll in the primary election.

Lewis will go on to face Tuesday's winner of a Republican primary that featured five candidates.

With 33 percent of precincts counted, Lewis had 61 percent of the vote compared to 39 percent for Driscoll.

The 36-year-old Lewis was an aide to former U.S. Sen. Max Baucus for 12 years and had not run previously for elected office. He received strong backing from party leaders.

Driscoll pledged to spend no more than $5,000 in the primary. The 67-year-old is a former speaker of the Montana House of Representatives.
