Senators Riding Pitching into Conference Play

Posted: Updated:
Ask anyone on the Helena Senators what their strength of their team is, go ahead, ask.

"Our pitching has been pretty good."

"We have a good rotation and we're pretty strong on our first six pitchers."

"Our defense and pitching have been really good this year."

Yes pitching is clearly the strength of this year's Senators. Even when they're bad, they're good.

"We've been pretty solid on the hill," said Senators head coach Dave Thennis. "And guys have down starts but they still throw strikes and give you an opportunity. When a guy has a bad start they're not giving up a dozen, they're giving up four or five."

"We haven't been having very many errors in our games," said senior pitcher/first baseman Joe Spradlin. "And from a pitchers standpoint you know that when you're throwing strikes and when hitters are hitting the ball you know that defense behind you is going to have your back."

"Our pitching staff is great," adds senior outfielder Tristan Shea. Holding those other teams to a couple hits a game, a couple runs so that's always helpful."

12-5 is a nice start, but a senior laden team like the Senators knows exactly how to turn the magic on and keep things going. And they plan to do so because a nice start is good but a great finish is memorable.

"We've already had a few ups and downs through the course of just our short season," laughed Thennis. "And that's baseball for you so we just want to continue to play well in some areas and improve in others."

"Being one of the seniors, you know leadership has to step up," said Spradlin. "You've been in this situation before in conference games and you know how important it is to be seeded well in state. So conference games are very important."

"Everyone has been playing defense well," added Shea. "You got the young kids coming up supporting everyone and everyone is just doing their job and helping with everything."

The strength of the Senators pitching will certainly be tested tomorrow night as they continue conference play against a potent Great Falls offense.
