Governors Cup Features Record Setting Performances

On your mark, get set, go! The 41st annual Governors Cup kicked off with the full marathon at 6 a.m. this morning! And while conditions were a little cold and windy, the runners all faced one much more difficult challenge.

"It was brutal," joked the men's winner of the marathon Collin Fehr. "I actually did a lot of training over here on this course and thought I had it figured out. But I severely underestimated the difficulty of the hills. Especially the last five miles because it's gradual uphill the whole way. And I was pretty much crawling at that point."

"The first miles you're cruising down hill, it feels good," said the women's winner of the marathon, 22 year old Mary Owen from Billings." And then you hit between seven and ten some really big hills. So I was like 'I hope I didn't go out too fast.' But I'm really pleased with how it went."

The man who really stole the show was Jim Walmsley, who took both the men's half marathon as well as the 5K, a feat that has never been done before.

"I was trying to toe the line and be competitive, you never know who's going to show up," said Walmsley of Black Eagle. "There's great runners all over Montana and any one of them could have shown up and caught me off guard. So I was trying to run conservative, but also try and test things out. And I was fortunate enough today that I felt good enough where I ended up getting a bit of a lead in both of them so I kind of lucked out on that one."

Why should the adults have all the fun. The final race of the day was the one mile Fun Run for kids, adults, parents, anyone who wanted to participate as a way to loosen up and end the day on a fun note.
