Petition Deadline is Quickly Approaching

Posted: Updated:
HELENA -

With only three days left, sponsors are under the gun to collect last minute signatures. For an initiative to make the November ballot, a sponsor needs to collect more than 24,000 signatures from voters in 34 house districts. And a constitutional initiative requires more than 48,000 signatures from within 40 house districts.

"(The petitions) are due into the counties this Friday, on June 20th," McCulloch said. "And then they have a month to approve all the signatures. They actually check every signature against the voter registration card to make sure it actually a voter that signed it."

Once verified, the secretary of state's office confirms the number of signatures collected. This year, their office has approved a dozen petition initiatives for signature gathering. Although voter participation is an important element to the process, McCulloch says voters should research the measure before signing a petition.

"You know often times the language is in the double negative," McCulloch."So it's really important that they research it and not just sign anyway."

It's too early to say which initiatives will make the November ballot but some of the measures include legalizing the adult use of marijuana, increasing digital privacy, as well as increasing access to Montana's Medicaid.
